The 10th edition of Italian Design Day in Toronto brought together industry leaders, architects, and cultural diplomats at the Ontario Investment and Trade Centre to celebrate the global influence of Italian creativity. Organized through a collaboration between ICCO Canada, the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto, the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) – Canada, and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura (IIC) Toronto, the event highlighted design as a cornerstone of the “Made in Italy” identity.
Strategic Exploration of “RE-DESIGN”
Centered on the theme “RE-DESIGN: Regenerating Spaces, Objects, Ideas, Relationships,” the evening explored how design acts as a strategic driver for navigating modern economic and environmental challenges. The program emphasized the balance between Italian aesthetic tradition and the urgent need for sustainable innovation in global urban landscapes.
The event featured a series of high-level contributions, including:
Institutional Welcomes: Opening remarks from Consul General Luca Zelioli, Alberta Lai (IIC Toronto), and Carlo Angelo Bocchi (ITA Canada) set the stage by reinforcing the strong commercial and cultural ties between Italy and Canada.
Keynote Address: Marco Sabetta of Salone del Mobile.Milano delivered a compelling keynote, defining design as an “orienting infrastructure” essential for shaping the future of global industry and urban life.
Expert Panel Discussion: Moderated by Elizabeth Pagliacolo (Editor-in-Chief of Azure Magazine), a distinguished panel of architects and academics—including Lisa Landrum, Tone Frisina, Ralph Giannone, and Pina Petricone—engaged in a dynamic dialogue on how regenerative design can rethink the systems and environments that define human interaction.
This milestone celebration concluded with a networking reception featuring a curated selection of Italian wines provided by Liquid Portfolio, facilitating further exchange between the Italian and Canadian design communities.
